Friends of Ballona Wetlands 🌱

Friends of Ballona Wetlands is a great volunteering program! Their goal is to keep the Ballona Wetlands healthy and safe for the animals that live there, such as rattlesnakes, coyote, and many others! To help the Wetlands, we pulled out invasive species. Here is a quote from their website, which is listed below. “Native plants are the structural and functional backbone of the Ballona Wetlands ecosystem because they provide food, water, and habitat.” This is why it is so important that you volunteer here to protect the wetlands! Any age can volunteer! When we got there, we were given gloves, to prepare for pulling out the plants! We then were taken to an area to learn about the wetlands. It is beautiful! Then, we were taken to the area and pulled out weeds! The program was a total of two hours. After we were finished, we put the weeds in a dumpster and took a group photo!

Shemesh Farms

Shemesh Farms is an amazing place to volunteer! Shemesh Farms is a farm that has many things accessible to people with disabilities, like their program Farm Fellows, which helps people with disabilities learn life and job skills. Their core values are: Tikkun Olam, Shomrai Adomah, Kehillah, and Tzedakah, which are all positive values meant to help the world! They also reserve a special part in their garden to give to the church next door, to give to people in need. Any age can volunteer! When you arrive, they tell you a little bit about Shemesh Farms, and then someone reads some of their values. We then were given many options for where we want to work! I choose to pull out invasive plants, which are flammable, and pulling them out decreases the chance of wildfire. They also have an awesome online store, and you can buy things when you are there! The program lasted a total of three hours. Shemesh Farms is an awesome program, be sure to check it out!
